If the transit of sun and venus be in Upachaya Rasis with strength with reference to the male partners nativity and occupy even navamsas, there is scope of pregnancy to be caused by the particular intercourse. Similar effects follow, if strong moon and strong Mars be in upachaya Rasis in transit with reference to the females horoscope and be in even navamsas. Alternatively Venus, Sun, Mars and moon should be in upachaya houses in own amsas, or jupiter be in lagna, fifth, or ninth with strength to cause pregnancy and child birth.

Sex of the child

If lagna, Moon, Jupiter and the sun be strong and be in male Rashis and male navamsas, birth of a male child be predicted. If they are in even rashis and even amsas we can predict a female child. If strong Jupiter (guru) and sun be in male rashis, male child will be born. Female child should be expected, if Venus, Moon and mars are in even rasis.

If Saturn is in Odd house other than lagna, a male child be born.

As a result of Moon's transit in Anupachaya Rasis and in aspect of Mars, a female obtains her mensus. The Moon is water and Mars is fire. Water produces blood and fire produces bile. Thus when blood is enraged by bile, the women gets her menstruation.

If the Moon is in Upachaya, it makes the menses defunct for conception. However, if the Moon in Upachaya is aspected by Jupiter, or her friends, or especially Venus, the women affectionately cohabits with the male. If the Moon is aspected by Mars, the female unites with a person other than husband. The sun, if aspecting the Moon, indicates a king, while saturn aspecting denotes a servant. Similar inferences should be made, if the Moon is aspected by malefics only, without aspect of benefics. If the Moon is aspected by malefics, like Mars, then the female gives up her home and becomes a prostitute.

The 7th house from Lagna at the time of copulation indicates the disposition of the couple. If there is a malefic aspect to the lagna at the time of copulation, the couple unites angrily and with quarrel. Should it be benefics aspect, then the sexual enjoyment will be as enumerated by Vatsyayana Maharshi. If there be both malefic and benefic aspects on the seventh house, the sexual act is mixed in nature. According to one's past deeds, to ripen its fruits the semen enters the womb and conception occurs.

What is Mangala Dosha? - Excerpt from 'Elements of Vedic Astrology'

I have written enough about the Sevvai dosham (tamil) or Mangal Dosha. Mangal Dosha is caused by the planet Mars When it is placed in 2,4,7,8 and 12th houses from Moon Sign / Rashi. In the south India Mangal Dosha is considered for 2nd house and in north India 1st house is dosha sthana. Here is the excerpt from the popular book, 'Elements of Vedic Astrology' -by Dr. K.S. Charak.

Dr. Charak is a popular Astologer who teach astrology in 'Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan', New Delhi. This excerpt will clear any doubts about mangal dosha, its remedies, and marraige compatibility between dosha horoscopes.

The Blemish of Mars

The disposition of Mars in chart is considered to be of special significance while considering a marital relationship. The location of Mars in the houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 is labelled as 'Mangala Dosha' or the blemish of Mars. If Mars is located in any of these houses, in the chart of the girl, it is said to lead to widowhood by causing death of her husband. Similar disposition of Mars in the chart of the boy can cause death of the wife. It is said that such disposition of Mars in a horoscope must be considered both from the lagna as well as the Moon. When the horoscopes of the bride and the groom both are free from Mangala Dosha, when considered both from the lagna and the Moon, the situation is favourable and needs further study.

The blemish of Mars may be considered nullified in the following circumstances:
a) When the blemish exists in the horoscopes of both the boy and the girl.

b) When one chart had the blemish of Mars while the other chart shows its neutralisation by the placement of another malefic (sun, Saturn, Rahu or ketu) in one of the houses mentioned above.

From the above it is apparent that any malefic located in the houses 1, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the lagna as well as the Moon in a given chart is not good for marital hormony unless equally matched by a similar disposition of malefics in the chart of the spouse. Preferably, the number of malefics influencing these houses must also be matched. Sometimes, remedial measures are prescribed to neutralise the Mangala Dosha.

This what Dr. Charak wrote about Mangal Dosha in his book 'Elements of Vedic Astrology'.

Sani Sade Sati - Case study

Longevity (lifespan) and sani (saturn)

In Indian vedic astrology Saturn plays important role in determining longevity or lifespan. Saturn / sani is the karaka planet for one's lifespan. Generally the 8th house in a horsocope chart represents the lifespan of a person. The 3rd bhava also is used for longevity determination.

Maharshi parasara in his Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra gives three different methods / formulae for longevity determination. They are pindayu, Amsayur, Nisargika ayur. In these methods parasar fixed different number of years to the nine planet. The total number of years is 120. According to the placement of planets friendly signs, enemy signs, exaltation rashi, debiliation rashi some years are deducted for each planet. The result will give the 'paramayul' or total lifespan. Generally these methods are not accurate. Maharshi recommeds to look for maraka dasha (Death inflicting dasha) and bukthi and improve the accuracy.

The maraka planets (death inflicting planets) are the lords of 2nd and 7th bhava. I have already told that the 3rd and 8th bhavas represent longevity. 2nd and 7th are twelfth to 3rd and 8th respectively. The 12th (vyaya bhava) house is house of loss. So 2nd and 7th are loss to 3rd and 8th respectively. So consider the lord of 2rd and 7th, their dasa and antardasha periods.

Here is the case study: The person was born on 07-october-1953 05:05 AM IST. The birth location is 'Coimbatore, Tamilnadu'. Here is the birth chart of the native,

This person was born in Kanya lagna and kanya rashi. You shoud note that sani was in second house. That means the person was running sade sati at the time of birth. There is a common belief that during the third cycle of sani sade sati the person will experience great difficulties in life and he may even die.

The person died on 1st december 2009. He was through the third cycle of sani sade sati. The saturn the keeper of one's karmic balance knows when to give him death. In this case the third cycle of sani sade sati brought death to the native. He was in the second 2 and half year period. The sade sati started when saturn occupied simma rashi (leo sign). During september 2009 saturn transited to kanya rashi (virgo sign). After just three month after the transit the native died suddenly of cardic failure (He already have heart problem, and taking medicines). His current vimsottari dasa is that of sani (Saturn major dasa). His current antara bukthi is that of budha (Mercury). Mercury is the lord of the 2nd house and maraka planet for this person. So the person died during Saturn maha dasa and mercury bukthi. In other words he died during the third cycle of sani sade sati and during saturns major period and also sub-period of the maraka planet mercury. What a perfect combination?

The person was a relative to me. He experienced many struggles during the past two years. His wife is suffering from diabetes and kidney failure. His elder daughter is mentally retarded. He is the only financial support to his family. His sudden departure is a great shock to his family. I would have warned him i had seen his horoscope before. Is it possible to avoid death, that is written in the horoscope chart. Who knows? Can we avoid the fate? Nobody knows. Is there any remedies to avoid death? This is a huge subject that must be discussed in detail. We will see this is another post.

The 7th house from teh lagna or the moon be flourished if they are associated with or aspected by benefics or their lords, if it is not so, they will not be fruitful.

If there be malefics in the 12th, 4th and 8th houses or if venus be hemmed in between two malefics or if venus be associated or aspected by malefics the native will los his wife.

If the lord of the 7th house occupies the 5th, the native will lose his wife (husband for female horoscopes) or he/she will become sonless. If the lord of the 5th or the 8th be in the 7th, the wife of the native does not survive. If teh weak moon be in the 5th or the 8th be in the 7th, the wife of the native does not survive. If the weak moon be in the 5th and the malefics occupy the Ascendant lagna, 7th and 12th houses the person concerned will be without wife and children. If the sun and rahu occupy the 7th house, the native will suffer loss of wealth through association with women.

The native loses his / her spouse if there are any of the following disposition of planets present at birth:

Venus in scorpio in the 7th house, Mercury in Taurus in the 7th house, Jupiter in Capricorn in the 7th house, Saturn in pisces in the 7th house, Mars in pisces in the 7th house.

However, if mars and saturn occupy the 7th house identical with cancer the native will be blessed with a wife who is beautiful and of good character.

The native is deprived of wife / husband if the 7th house or its lord be associated with or aspected by malefics, hemmed in between malefics, be in his sign of debiliation or an inimical sign or be eclipsed by the sun's rays.

The native will lose his/her wife/husband or wife, when venus in conjunction with malefic occupies the 7th, 5th or 9th house.

The native will have illicit relations with other people's wives if venus be in the varga of Mars of Saturn or be aspected by these planets.

If mars and saturn be in the 7th from the venus and moon in any nativity, the person concerned will be wifeless and childless.

If there be a hermaphrodite planet in the 7th house, and the 11th house is occupied by two planets, the persons concerned will have two wives.

A person will have two wives in the event of both the lord of the seventh and the eleventh house is occupies by two planets, the person concerned will have two wives.

A person will have two wives in the event of both the lord of the seventh and venus being posited in a dual sign or amsa.

The number of wives should generally ascertained from the number of planets that are in conjunction with the lord of 7th house and venus.

The native will associate with as many womoen as is the number of planets posited in the 7th house. The number of women, who will die, will be equal to the number of malefics, and the number of benefics will present the number of women who will survive.

Should the lord of the 7th house be a benefic endowed will strength, the native will have a wife who will be of good character and will bear children. Even a malefic if he being lord of 7th be posited in the 7th will bless the native with a good wife.

Benefics in the 7th house will produce good effects unless they happen to be lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th house. Loss of wife will result if the 2nd and 7th houses are associated with or aspected by malefics. The result will invariably be untoward in the case of malefic aspects. Similar results may be declared from the wife's nativity if the 7th and 8th houses are similarly afflicted. But should the above two houses be associated with or aspected by benefics, the couple will enjoy good luck and comforts. If in a female's birth chart, the Moon and Saturn be together in the 7th house, the native marries again (after the first marriage). If there be such a planetary disposition in man's nativity, he will be wifeless or childless.

If malefics in their signs of debilitation be posited in the 2nd, 7th and 8th, in female's nativity the disposition will make her a widow and in a man's chart, it will render him a widower. If the 7th house from the Ascendant be an even sign and the lord of the 7th and Venus be also posited in even signs, and if the lord of the 5th and 7th possessed of strength be not eclisped by Sun's rays, the native will be blessed with wife and children. The native will be happy and will be blessed with wife and children, if the lords of the 2nd, 7th and 12th be posited in kendra or trikona aspected by Jupiter and there be benefics in the 2nd, 7th and 11th to the lord of the 7th wherever he may be. Note the sign and navamsa in male s nativity. The signs in which the lords of the ascendant and 7th are posited, the Janma Rashi (Moon sign) of the wife will be triangular to such sign or navamsa, or it may be the exaltation or depression sign of the lords of the 1st and 7th or it be that sign which contains the largest number of benefic dots in the Moon's Ashtakavarga of the husband. The direction of the country of the wife will be indicated by the sign owned by the strongest of the three planets, namely (1) the planet posited in the 7th house, (2) the lord of the 7th house and (3) Venus. The marriage of the native should take place when the Venus or the lord of the 7th transits through a sign which is trine to the sign or navamsa occupied by the lord of the ascendant. The marriage is likely to take place during the dasha of the planet (1) occupying the 7th house, (2) which aspects the 7th house or (3) the lord of the 7th house. It can also take place when the lord of the ascendant transits through the sign representing the 7th house. Find out who amongst (1) the lord of the sign in which lord of the 7th is posited and the lord of the navamsa which the lord of the 7th occupies and (2) Venus and Moon, is stronger. The marriage will take place in the dasha of this stronger planet when Jupiter in transit passes through the sign triangular to the sign or navamsa occupied by the lord of the 7th.

If the lord of the 7th be posited in his sign of debilitation, be in an inimical sign, be combust or be aspected by a malefic and the 7th house be occupied or aspected by a malefic, there will be loss of wife.

Many prediction of mantreswara about the 7th house are to be researched for accuracy. For example he tells when the number wives are equal to the number of planets in 7th house, which is not practically acceptable. There are many persons with two more planets in 7th house with single wife or without marriage.

How to predict planetary transit effects?

There are twelve houses / rashis/ bhavas in a horoscope chart. The 360 degree zodiacal circle is divided into 12 signs of 30 degree each. The nine planets traverse through these signs. Some fast moving planets like moon and sun take little time to traverse a sign. Saturn takes two and half years and Jupiter takes about year to traverse a sign.

Here is the list of benefic or malefic position of planets. These positions are calculated by counting from the birth rashi / moon sign to the current planet position. For example if moon was at Rishaba rashi during birth and sun is at simha, counting from rishabha we get the number 4. The results vary for different positions. Daily horoscope is designed accordingly.

Sun transit effects: When sun is posited at houses 3,6,10,11 the results are benefic and good otherwise the results are bad and unfavorable.

Moon transit effects: When moon is posited at 1,3,6,7,10,11 benefic results are enjoyed by the native otherwise malefic results will prevail.

Mars transit effects: When mars resides at 3,6,10,11 houses from moon sign transit results are favorable and otherwise not favorable.

Mercury transit effects: When mercury occupies bhavas 2,4,5,8,10 and 11 the results are good and otherwise not good.

Jupiter transit effects: When Jupiter occupies 2,5,7,9 and 11th houses the results are subh / good

Venus transit effects: When sukhra occupies 1,2,3,4,5,8,9,11 and 12 good results will prevail otherwise not.

Saturn transit effects: When sani occupies 3,6 and 11th houses from birth rashi, the native enjoys good results.

Another two important concepts in daily prediction is ‘Vedha’ (obstructing) position of planets and ‘Thara’ positions. These are important concepts to consider while predicting future. We will see about them in next lessons.

How Daily Horoscope (Rashi palan) Predictions are calculated?

Everyone is interested in his future. What will happen to me? What about my career / profession? How will be my health? What will be my financial position? To know the future everyone refers to their astrological moon sign. In Indian vedic Astrology system we use moon sign /rashi as reference point. Moon completes one zodiacal cycle of 360 degrees in about 28 days. Birth nakshatra / star is also based on the position of moon.

There are 27 nakshatra constellations along the zodiacal belt. To predict the future we need to count from the janma / birth nakshatra to planets current nakshatra constellation and results are calculated accordingly. Further we needed to consider Graha (planet’s) subh (benefic) ashubh (malefic) characteristics and janma – anujanma – thrijanma positions.

Further we need to consider ashtakavarga table of the planet in question.

The 360 degree zodiac contains 27 nakshatras each divided into four quarters / padas. We have already given nakshatra / rashi table. Here the chart again for your reference.

Guru Peyarchi - Jupiter's Transit

In Joyotish, transit of planets from one house to another is considered important. This month of December 2009, the most benefic planet jupiter (Guru) goes to kumbha (Aquarius) from Makara (capricorn). Last month we saw the transit of rahu-ketu nodes. Rahu changed house from makara to Danush and ketu from simah to kadaka. And a month before saturn transit from simha (leo) to kanya (virgo). Generally these planets stay in any house for more than one year and their tranists are considered imporatnt because they result will be same for a long time either good or bad. So people pay great attention to these transits. Magazines and newspapers write much about the transit results. Special editions are published by news papers. Special poojas, pariharas and homas are performed to get benefits from the Grahas.

What ancient jyotish classic tell about these transits?

Ancient classics like parashara hora shastra written by maharshi parashara and kalayanavarama's saravali, and Brihat jataka mention little or none about the transit / Gochar effects. Only western astrologers give much important to planet transits. We (hindu astrologers) rely heavily on Dasa system (especially vimsothari dasa) for future predictions.

We use moon based "lunar system" for Gochar/Transit predictions. Birth rasi / moon sign is determined by the position of moon / chandra in a horoscope at the time of birth. For exmaple if you have moon in your birth horoscope at Rishaba / Taurus, your moon sign / birth rashi is Rishaba / Taurus.

I will write a seperate tutorial / lessons for Gochar / transit effect. Now we will see the results for Guru peyarchi / jupiter's transit breifly.

When jupiter occupies houses 2,5,7,9,11 from birth rashi the results will be good other wise bad.

for example, if your birth rashi is rishaba and jupiter occupies mithuna, kanya(libra) , Vrichika(Scorpio) , Makara(Capricorn) , Meena (Pisces) the result will be auspicious and good otherwise bad.

There are many other factors to be considered while determining transit results. Whether the rashi / sign is friendly/ruling/debiliation/exaltaion sign of the planet.

For example when jupiter is posited at 5th house (children) and aspected by saturn (sani) there will be troubles for children.

Jupiter in 1st bhava / house:

When jupiter is in your birth rashi / moon sign is not favorable for you. Jupiter is called 'Janma Guru'. Even if jupiter is benefic for your lagna / ascendant he will do some harms /ill effects. You should recite mantras for jupters on Thursdays to reduce the ill effects.

Jupiter in 2nd house:

When jupiter occupies second house from janma rashi you will get material benefits like money. Marriages can be performed and other auspicious things will happen.

Jupiter in 3rd house:

Inauspicious position, failures, fear, job loss, problems from servant, problems from superiors, problems between brothers, change in professions, transfer in jobs etc.

Jupiter in 4th house:

This position too is not good. Enemity in relations, uncomfortable for mother, unnecessary travels, expenses due to house, property, land and vehicle.

Jupiter in 5th house:

Gain of name and fame in society, celebrations due to children, good income even when expense is high, yathra / pilgrimage.

Jupiter in 6th house:

Struggles from enemies, debts and financial problems. Diseases and expense for medical treatment and doctors fees, sudden travels and health ailments.

Jupiter in 7th house:

Happiness to wife / husband, marriage and other auspicious functions, gain name fame and esteem. Gains from investments and deposits.

Jupiter in 8th house:

Enemity, quarrels, unnecessary struggles, health problems and medical expenses, problems in business / profession.

Promotion in job / profession, Gain in official status, visit pilgrimages and other good effects.

Your birth lagna (ascendant) is Makara (Capricorn) and its lord is sani (Saturn). Your moon sign / rashi is simha (leo).

In astrology lagna and its lord is important. It determines the destiny of the individual. In your chart sani is the lord of lagna. The first thing we noted was that sani is debilated at 4th house. Debiliation means weakness / bereft of power. The lagna denotes the general well being of the Individual. The weak lagna can not do much good for the native. Fortunately Saturn is in retrogade motion which means the ill effects of debiliation is suppressed to some extent. The 4th lord Mars is also debilated. These planetary combination cause those mental anguish and constant restlessness / fearfeeling.

In a horoscope the 10th house denotes profession / career. In your horoscope the tenth lord sukra (venus) is in 8th house from lagna which is not a good placement. Your current Vimshottari Maha dasha is Guru (Jupiter), lord of 3rd and 12th houses which is not good placement. However Jupiter is a natural benefic planet which will bestow some good fortunes during its dasha. Professional obstacles will decrease after Jupiter major and minor periods, i.e after May 2011.

Brihat Jataka of Varaha Mihira

This is another authoritative work on Indian Vedic Astrology. The original work of Sage Varaha Mihira was translated into english by N. CHIDAMBARAM IYER, founder of the Tiruvadi Jotistantra Sabha. Chidambaram Iyer gives an excellent introduction by explaining the scientific nature of Astrology and Horoscopy. In a step-by-step manner he clears the myths and misconceptions about this ancient science.

In the Introduction MR. Iyer tells about the Indian proverb says that 'there is no man who is not a bit of a physician and an astrologer'; and it is equally true that there is no subject which is so ill understood as these two. The fact is that the broad medical and astrological principles are so many that everybody of necessity learns a few of these, but experiences a difficulty in mastering all of them.

By strong statements and evidence he defends Jyotish. He touched on Nadigrandham, a method of prediction. Nadi is practised in many places in India especialy in South India. It is not uncommon to see a signboard read as 'Agasthayar Nadi Nilayam', where an expert reads some palm leaves and tells about the past live. Most Nadi predictions are only about past. They can not tell about the future. The author explains the methodology used in Nadi. In the Introduction he gives the definition for horoscopy from the original sanskrit text.

"Horoscopy is stated to be science of 'Ahoratri' or the science of day and night - these being the broadest visible divisions of time - multiples of which give weeks, months, years, etc., and divisions of which give hours, minutes, seconds, etc., The first letter A, and the last legger tri, having been dropped, the term has assumed the shape of hora, and the author says that hora Shastra treats of the effects of the good and bad deeds of an individual in his previous birth.

The author explains the errors that cause the kundli chart that renders the horoscope faulty. In those days, with little scientific knowledge in astronomy and lack of equipments the calculation of palnetary positions were not accurate. There were different concepts about the Ayanamsha or "Precessiona of Equinox". The western astrology doesn't account for Ayanamsha (Sayana) and Indian astrology considers it (Nirayana method). The author tells that because of these mistakes in calculation the predictions go wrong. Below is an excerpt from the Introduction.

"Astrology rests on astronomy. The latter science was probably in a good condition at the time of Vikramarka. The tables for the calculation of the places of the planets which were then framed or then in use, were all suited to the time. Owing probably to the wear and tear of the several working parts of the whole machinery of the Solar System, the tables of one age are unsuited to another age."

"Since error in calculation is as sinful as the murder of a Brahmin, the correct places of the planets shall be ascertained by daily meridian observations."

Finally for the skeptics and non-believers the author gives the following word: "advise those who value truth to spend a few days in examining the principles laid down in this work and applying them to their own individual cases before they join the herd of the learned and the unlearned inn pledging their words to a false assertion, Viz., that Astrology is an unfoudned science."

This is the old saying about fate. Astrology gives methods to calculate one's life span. This ancient text gives three methods, namely Pindayurdara and Lagnayurdaya. The 42 divisions of human brain have been related to the different houses of a man's birth chart in such a scientific manner that the sketch of human brain reflects accurately on the lines of the palm.

The birth chart of an individual is prepared like the traditional Parashar principles, but the only important difference is that the Rashis are not considered or taken into account for predictive strology and, therefore, the digits indicating the Rashis in a traditional birth chart are scrapped.

Jaimini Sutras

Jaimini Sutras or Jamini Upadesha Sutras are branch of vedic astrology. This is based on ancient text given by Maharishi Jaimini in the form of sutras, that is divided into four chapter or Adhyayas. There about 1000 sutras in total. The original sutras were written in sanskrit. It was difficult to dechiper the meaning of these sutras, as they were in highly condensed form. So this leads to some mistakes in interpretation and translation. The sutras are really a gift to Jyotish. They help to accurate predictions in various aspects of life.

Jaimini is also famous for his great treatises Jaimini Bharata and Poorva Mimansa Shastra. His guru was the great Rishi Veda Vyasa, who was the son of Rishi Parashara!! Actually several of the "The Jaimini System" principles were mentioned by Parasara in his Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra. While Parasara mentioned them briefly, Jaimini expounded them fully. Hence it is known as the "Jaimini system of astrology".

In Jaimini astrology a number of different Ascendants or Lagnas are involved obviously for a lot of different purposes. There are Arudha-Lagna, Upapada-Lagna, Chandra-Lagna, Bhava-Lagna, Hora-Lagna, Ghatika-Lagna, Nisheka-Lagna, Karakamsha-Lagna and Varada-Lagna just to mention some of them. I have found some of these Lagnas to be highly useful.

In Jaimini-astrology the Dasa-systems are based on Rasis or signs and not on Nakshatras and planets like in Vimsottari Dasa etc. There are many different Dasas in Jaimini like Chara-Dasa, Sthira-Dasa, Trikona-Dasa, Shoola-Dasa, Varnada-Dasa, Navamsa-Dasa, Brahma-Dasa, Yogardha-Dasa, Drig-Dasa and Mandooka-dasa just to mention a few of them.

However, with many of these Dasas there seem to be certain conditions like planetary patterns that have to be fulfilled, meaning that many of the Dasa-systems should not be used unless their particular conditions are present in the horoscope under consideration.

Only four of these Dasa-systems seem to be for universal use for all horoscopes:

1) Chara-Dasa
2) Sthira-Dasa
3) Niryana-Shoola-Dasa
4) Navamsa-Dasa.

These unique sign-based Dasa-systems are the backbone of the timing of the events in Jaimini Astrology, and if used together with the transits it is possible to make fairly accurate predictions from them simply by following the predictive rules given in Jaimini Sutras combined with good judgement and practical experience.

The Myths & Truths about Kal Sarpa Yoga

In the recent times, Kal Sarpa Yoga has become the most common point of discussion in the country. It is said that this is most ominous combination, all the beneficial roles of planets are destroyed & the native having Kal Sarpa yoga in his chart is said to be suffering through all kind of hardships throughout his life, while his hardship doesn’t yield any good result.

Now let’s see what is the combination of this Kal Sarpa yoga?

It is said that if all the planets are between Rahu & Ketu, then it becomes Kal Sarpa Yoga, giving result to an ominous combination. However, books are being published under this name, with suggested remedies etc. while astrologers keep themselves busy by discussing about this topic in newspapers, television & internet with the relevant information they have about the effects of this yoga.

The word, “Kal Sarpa” itself frightens anybody as the “Kal” (meaning a bad period) takes the form of “Sarpa” (Snake) & troubles the native. For no reason, even the astrologers of today are talking about the frightening effects of Kal Sarpa Yoga. Some of the results, which they opine are, the native’s fate is damned, he cannot earn name & fame in his/hers life, may not get a job or his/hers work atmosphere will never be good, may suffer from financial problems, problems in having offspring etc. all such craps.

According to the modern “orators” of Kal Sarpa Yoga, if all the planets are within the half of Rahu & Ketu or if one or more planets are with Rahu or Ketu, while the others are in between, then it is, “Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga” (Total Kal Sarpa yoga). However if six planets are in between Rahu & Ketu, while another one is located in the other half, then it is termed as, “Ardha Kal Sarpa Yoga (Partial Kal Sarpa Yoga).

Some of them say that people born with Partial Kal Sarpa Yoga lead more disastrous life than people having Total Kal Sarpa Yoga.

Searching the classics for the existence of KSY

Whenever a problem arises, we consult the classics of Vedic astrology, but in this case the problem is that we don’t find anything regarding Kal Sarpa Yoga in Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Jaiminisutram, Brihat Jatakam, Uttar Kalamrita, Phaladeepika, Jatak Parijat, Sarbartha Chintamani, Bhabartharatnakar, Jatakabharanam, Sanketnidhi, Bhabakutuhalam, Manasagari Paddhati, even the modern Astro books like, jataktatwa etc. don’t speak anything about this Kal Sarpa Yoga.

Pundit Shree P.S. Sastri discussed about Kal Sarpa Yoga in the Astrological magazine published from Bangalore in the volume of December 1965, October 1987 & September 1994. While discussing about KSY, Mr. Sastri quoted a sloka, but didn’t mention about its root. However he admitted that classics don’t talk KSY. The sloka he quoted is as under:-

agre rähuù ante ketu sarbe madhyagatä grahäù|
yogam kälasarpäkhyam nåpa çasya binäçanam||

-the meaning is quite clear. If rahu is at front & ketu is at last while all other planets are in between, then this combination is called Kal Sarpa Yoga & results into death of king of destruction of grains.

It is clear that the above mentioned sloka has nothing to do with personal astrology (Jatak Jyotish) & is related to mundane astrology (Rashtriya Jyotish).

In that same magazine, another writer supported this combination by refering it to classics like Brihat Jatakam by Varahamihira & he wrote about Sarpa Yoga, the condition of which is Sun, Mars & Saturn in kendras while the rest of the planets in houses other than kendras, & this combination is mentioned in the chapter of nabhas Yoga of Brihat Jatakam, Saravali by KalyanVarma, & in the texts of Badarayan, Manish & Garga etc.

We know that Varahamihira has discussed about the existence of Sarpa Yoga in his Brihat Jatakam(chapter of Nabhas Yogas). According to him, if malefics are in Kendras then that combination is known as “Sarpa Yoga”, & he has taken the name of Maharshi Parasara to support this yoga. Bhattotpal, commentator of Brihat Jatakam, also named Mahrshi Manish & Badarayan. However, this yoga didn’t include Rahu & Ketu, as in the texts of Varahamihira, Rahu or Ketu hasn’t been accepted or any importance. Bhattotpal has made it clear about the condition for Sarpa Yoga, he says,

“yeñu keñu triñu kendreñu päpakñaya süryabhaumasaurä tabanti na kaçcit kendre bhabati saumya graha tadä sarpo näm yogo bhabiçyati”

-that means if Sun, Saturn & Mars occupy then it is Sarpa Yoga (while other planets are not in kendras). Dr. P.S. Shastri has said the same in the Astrological magazine of June, 1994. So we can see rahu or ketu has got nothing to do with this ominous yoga viz., Sarpa Yoga.

We can deduce that Kal Sarpa Yoga has no reference in classical texts, nor supported by any astrological texts, because Maharshi Parasar, Jaimini, Varahamihira, Ramanujacharya, Kalidas, Baidyanath Dixit, Benkateswar Daivajna, Mantreswar, Chuntiraj or famous astrologers didn’t accept this yoga.

Results of Rahu & Ketu

It is generally considered that one having Kal sarpa Yoga will have a ruined life will devastating results, as all other planets start acting as malefics as they lose their potential to do good--- thus violating the basic rule as prescribed by Maharshi Parasara. In his book Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Maharshi Parasara has told us how to analyse the results of Rahu & Ketu-

“yad yad bhävagato rähuù ketuçca janane nåëäm|
yad yad bhäbeçasaàyuktastat falaà pradiçedalam||” ,

Rahu & ketu will give results according to their houses they are placed & according to the conditions the lord of those houses that are placed in a given chart.

If rahu & ketu, who do not have any power of their won to give results, then how the good results of planets placed between Rahu & Ketu will nullify does not have any reasonable answer.

It is clear according to Maharshi Parasara, that Rahu & Ketu does not have anything of their own(as they are Nodes). So we cant agree that presence of all planets between Rahu & ketu will nullify all the good results of the planets placed, & results into Kal Sarpa Yoga. Without any doubt, Rahu & Ketu are natural malefics and in Brihat Parasara Hora sastra we find many yogas formed by Rahu & Ketu alongwith any other malefics, but no yogas are mentioned, which is formed by Rahu & Ketu.

We know that a planet’s role (both as a benefic & a melefic) depends upon its nature, according to lordships, according to its position, according to combinations formed.

As for Rahu & Ketu, they can’t give results according to lorshipd, but they have a major role to play according to their placements. If Rahu & Ketu is posited in a benefic’s house or related to any benefic, then definitely it will give good results, which has been seen in many of the charts.

Now let us discuss on Rahu & ketu according to various classical literatures.

In Laghu Parasari, in 2nd Chapter, 8th sloka, it is clearly said that if Rahu or Ketu are posited in Kendras or Trikonas & if they are related to lords of Kendras or Trikonas, then they become Rajyogakaraks.

As you know, malefics if occupy Upachayas(3,6,10,11 houses from Lagna) then they give good results. So if Rahu & Ketu occupies the above said houses, no doubt they will give good results.

In Manasagari Paddhati, a very similar sloka is very appropriate in the current context of discussion. In that very text, presence of Rahu in Vrishabh, Kark, Simha & in Kanya have been eulogised & it is said that Rahu acts as a Rajyoga karaka. The results have been seen in many natives life, where Rahu is posted in any of the above signs of zodiac. In Bhavarthratnakar by Shree Ramanujacharya, we find that presence of Rahu in 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, & in Kendras & konas & presence of ketu in 3rd bhava is considered to be auspicious & there it is said that Rahu & ketu in their own dasas will give results of similar to rajyoga (9th Chapter, Sloka-3-4). In the same text, Shree Ramanujacharya has considered Rahu to be a Rajyoga Karak, even if he occupies the 7th bhava.

As said earlier in the same text viz., Laghu Parasari it is said that Rahu & ketu if occupies the kendras & konas & even if they are not related to kendra or trikona lords, still in their own antar dasas will give results similar to Raj Yogas (chapter 4, sloka 8).

While discussing about Rahu bhukti under Rahu dasa, Maharshi Parasar says in his book that it is always auspicious to have Rahu in Kark, Dhanush, Kanya or Brischik (chapter 41 sloka 1) & in Shani Dasa Rahu Bhukti, he says that it is auspicious to have Rahu in Mesh, Brishabh, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Dhanush or in Meen (chapter 43 sloka 67).

As you all know that Sarbarth Chintamani is a good reference while analysing dasa results. In the same text the dasa results of rahu has been said to be good, provided it is posted in Mesh, Brishabh, Karkata, Kanya, Dhanu or in Meen (chapter 16, sloka 21 & 22).

According to Phaladeepika dasa of Rahu is good when it is posted in signs like Kanya, Brischik or Meen (chapter 19, sloka 16).

Moreover according to Maharshi Parasara, one should predict about ones wealth from the position of Rahu (chapter 14 sloka 19). It is expected from a learner of Jyotish to know that a well-placed Rahu in his dasa gives wealth.

While speaking about the dasa results of Rahu when it is well placed, he says- All are beneficial for the native, be it regarding to Kingdom, begetting son, money, wealth, vehicles, construction of new home, patronised by the king etc. (chapter 36 sloka 42,46-49).

Both Parasara & Jaimini are of the opinion that when Ketu is auspiciously placed it might result into Moksha.

All these above said conditions are stated to prove that Rahu & Ketu are not always inauspicious & not at all responsible to minimise all the good effects of planets posted between them. So, Kal Sarpa Yoga is not established by the astrological writings & none of the classics mention about it.

Predicting ones future using this Yoga

Many of the Astrologers, who all believe this Yoga, tries to prove their prediction while using his yoga & if those natives have experienced anything ominous, then they state that Kal Sarpa Yoga is responsible for such ill effects. If one yoga is enough to nullify all good results & if ones relies upon a single yoga, then there is no point in talking about such yoga which is irrelevent.

All the charts published in the “Astrological Magazine” regarding Kal Sarpa Yoga, was gone through by another learned astrologer & in the same Magazine, he said that all the ill results caused to those concerned persons are not due to Kal Sarpa Yoga, but due to the presence of planets in inauspicious places.

Some examples charts with Kal sarpa dosha

Still, we are ready to accept such yoga, which is not supported by any classics. But for general belief, we need to give examples for proving what we decide, as we do in Science & in Arts.

It is generally considered that one having Kal Sarpa Yoga suffers throughout his life, while “Ardha” Kal Sarpa Yoga is much more “poisonous” than “Purna” Kal Sarpa Yoga. Is it relevent to the present situation?? Or is it possible?? But we are surprised to find horoscopes of many famous personalities who had Kal Sarpa Yoga according to the “present” astrologers, still they had no problem in achieving success.

Some example of Purna Kal Sarpa yoga:-

1) Shree Shree Mahaprabhu Chaitanyadev- Simha Lagna, Moon & Ketu in Lagna, Sun, Mercury, Venus & Rahu in 7th, rest of the planets between Rahu & Ketu.

2) Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru- Karkata lagna, Rahu in 12th, Jupiter with Ketu in 6th, rest of the planets between Rahu & Ketu.

3) Scientist Dr. K.S. Krishnan- Mesh Lagna, Mercury & Rahu in 9th, Ketu in 3rd, rest of the planets between rahu & Ketu.

There are plenty of examples but I don’t want it to be unnecessarily large, so have refrained from giving more examples of Purna Kal Sarpa Yoga.

Now, some examples of Ardha Kal Sarpa yoga or
“Bhanga Kal Sarpa Yoga”: -

1) “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi- Except Jupiter, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

2) Author of the book “Bande Mataram” Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay- Except Saturn, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

3) Adi Shankaracharya- Except Saturn, all are between Rahu & Ketu.

4) Swami Ramanujacharya- Except Jupiter, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

5) Singer Hemanta Mukhopadhayay (better known as Hemant Kumar)- Except Mars, all planets are between Rahu & Ketu.

By seeing the above examples charts with kal sarpa yoga we come to the conclusion that this is not a dosha instead a great Raja yoga. Because the persons mentioned are world famous for their religious, political and social status. If it were a bad yoga they could not have attained such a status.

Conclusion

Thus we can deduce, that Kal Sarpa Yoga is nothing but a “cultivated” yoga, only to scare people who come to seek astrological advice. As the examples given above it is true that whatever incomplete they felt in their life, was due to planetary position, not due to the so called “Kal Sarpa Yoga”. I have a number of horoscopes where there is presence of Kal Sarpa Yoga, but those persons have felt the height of success in their life, but inclusion of those examples will unnecessarily make this work pretty large.

Heart ailments and Horoscope

According to 'Kala Purush Thathva' the twelve signs of the zodiac ranging from Aries to Pisces represents parts of the human body from Head to Foot. For example Aries represents the head and the organs in head.

The discussion here is Heart, the important organ in human body. How can you identify the ailments to heart and the cure? Heart is represented by the sign, Cancer (Kadakam). So look at this sign to predict the health of your heart.

If planet Saturn is placed at Cancer, it is an indication that the native will suffer from some kind of heart ailment. I have found this to be true with some real time examples. My friend (a computer technician) have Saturn in cancer and he underwent coronary angioplasty two years ago. In his case the disease was severe and he underwent immediate surgery. My brother too have Saturn in cancer and he too had some complications last year. But the doctor ruled out any significant threat. In essence an afflicted / badly posited Saturn will cause troubles. If the Saturn is posited and is benefic to ascendant (lagna) it won't do harm, is my opinion.

Cancer and Saturn are not definitive indication of heart disease. There may some other factor to be considered. The karaka planet, the lagna, the 6th house indicating disease and other factors like planetary aspects and running dasa to accurately predict When Where and How a person will fall ill. We will discuss each in subsequent posts.

According to Thirukanitha (Drig) Almanac the planet lord saturn enters the Virgo sign from Leo Sign on 09-09-2009, 10:34 PM. IST. (ie. from uthiram -1st quarter to uthiram 2nd quarter). I have give predictions for all rashis in my previous posts. According to Vakkiya Panchang Shani peyarchi takes place on 26-09-2009.

Which date of saturn transit is authentic?

I have already mentioned this 15 day difference is negligible as saturn will stay in a sign for about 2.5 years. In fact the results of the transit will be experienced by individuals only after 3-4 months.

Another interesting thing of notice is the date and time combination of 09-09-09, 09:09:09 AM that occurs today. This will occur once in a year. Look at your watch!

According to 'Thirukanitha panchangam' on 09th September, 2009 at 10:34 pm, Saturn (Saneeswar) changes sign in the zodiac, enters Virgo from Leo sign. This ‘rashi pravesh’ is considered significant in astrology as it will bring about major changes in lives of individuals. Saturn (sani) stays in a rashi (sign) for about two and half years. Benefits of Sani Peyarchi changes from according to their birth rashi (moon sign).

What is kala sarpa dosha?

What is Kal sarapa dosha?
Kala sarpa dosha is caused by the Shadow planets rahu and kethu. When all the seven other planets sun, moon, mercury, venus, mars, jupiter and shani are hemmed beween the rahu-ketu kal sarpa dosha is formed.
For example in your chart Rahu is posited at simma rasi (leo) and ketu at kumbham (Aquarius) rashi. If all other planets are placed at meenam, Mesham, Rishabam, Mithunam and Kadaka rasi this dosha is formed. If any one planet falls out side there is no dosha.
Why kala sarpa dosha is feared?
This dosha is believed to weaken the power of other planets and render them useless. So a person with this dosha suffers during his early life. This dosha will weaken in the later years of the life.

This dosha is different than the naga dosha which exists in birth horoscope. Naga dosha is not kala sarpa dosha.
Late prime minister of India pandit Nehru had kala sarapa dosha. It is true that he suffered a lot and spent many years in jail for India's Independance. Later he became the prime minister of India, a great privilege and supreme post.

What is the parihara (remedy) for kala sarpa dosha?
There exist no parihara according to ancient jyotish classics. If your jathaka has kala sarpa dosha even if other planets are powerful and it kendra sthanas, you will not enjoy the benefits of these grahas. In practical I have this dosha in my horoscope. I have four planets in ucha (exalt) houses. Still this rahu dasha is proving very tough for me. I suffered a lot in profession and earnings.
